Ħamrun

BACKGROUND

It is one of the sixty-eight local councils that make up the current territorial organization of the Republic of Malta, which came into force in 1993.

WHAT TO SEE

Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church was built at the beginning of the 17th century by a merchant who brought the painting of the Virgin from Atocha in Spain. The people from Hamrun refer to it as Tas-Samra. Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church is the oldest chapel of the town and the Motherhouse of the Society of Christian Doctrine founded by Saint George Preca.

The Chapel of Porto Salvo, built in the Baroque Style, was built in 1736. Today the chapel is used mostly for the adoration of the Holy Eucharist. The local refer to the chapel as Ta’ Santu Nuzzo. We also find the Church of San Francisco de Asís, built in the 1950s by the Franciscan Community.

The Immaculate Conception Parish Church was built in the 1960s. In 1973 it became the first parish to receive the Neocatechumenal Way, from where it spread to another 26 parishes in the Maltese Islands.

The Neocatechumenal Way is also present in St. Cajetan Parish. Together these two parishes have 13 ‘communities’ with around 450 members.

The Patron Saints of the city are Saint Cajetan, the Immaculate Conception and Saint Joseph. The festivity of Saint Cajetan is celebrated on the first Sunday after August 7 and the commemoration of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated on the first Sunday of July and December 8.

The image of the Immaculate Conception is highly venerated due to the admiration aroused by the great pontiff Leo XIII, who conferred grace by distributing an indulgence to anyone who expressed its devotion.

HOLY WEEK AND EASTER

Malta Holy Week is known worldwide for its Catholic traditions and the passion with which the population experience it, staging events and processions that leave both tourists and locals amazed. It is relevant to point out that there are more than 360 churches in an archipelago of just 300 square kilometers.

Hamrun Holy Week is part of the Southern Regional Council, made up of a total of twelve localities that have in common, among other things, the celebration of the procession of the Virgin of Sorrows.

On Holy Wednesday takes place the procession of Christ the Redeemer. It begins next to the Church of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal and ends at the statue of Jesus Christ located in the Sanctuary of Saint Cajetan. The procession is accompanied by funeral bands and the first Hamrun Scout group.
